Boston Wedding Venues: Downtown, North Shore or South Shore, and What Each Does to Your Timeline

Twelve Boston-area wedding venues sorted by distance from the Common and grouped by downtown, North Shore and South Shore, with Google ratings and ceremony start times for every month of 2027.

Boston couples usually know which of three weddings they want before they know the venue: the city one, with a Beacon Hill room and a Public Garden portrait; the North Shore one, with an estate lawn and the ocean twenty minutes away; or the South Shore one, a country-club or lakeside property where everything happens under one roof. The list below sorts the venues couples ask us about by distance from the Common, so the choice is honest about what it costs in drive time.

The three weddings

Downtown. State Room, Hampshire House and Harvard Club of Boston are all within three miles of each other and each is a room rather than grounds: the State Room is thirty-three floors up with the harbor below, Hampshire House looks straight onto the Public Garden, and the Harvard Club is Commonwealth Avenue brick and paneling. Portraits happen on the street, in the Garden, on the Esplanade, and the best of them are the walk between the ceremony and the room. Getting-ready is a hotel suite and the whole day is walkable.

North Shore. Seven to twenty-two miles up 1 and 128. Oceanview of Nahant is the one on the water, on a peninsula with ocean three ways. Glen Magna Farms and Willowdale Estate in Danvers and Topsfield are the estates with lawns and gardens; Tupper Manor in Beverly is the mansion version; Hamilton Hall in Salem is the historic room and Danversport is the waterfront banquet house on the Danvers River; Olio in Peabody is the restored-building option. Salem itself is a portrait city, all brick and harbor, and it is also packed solid every October weekend, which is worth knowing before you book a fall date there.

South Shore. Saphire Estate in Sharon is on Lake Massapoag and has the water for the sunset; The Villa at Ridder Country Club in East Bridgewater is the country-club estate twenty-one miles south. Both are the kind of property where the ceremony, cocktails, dinner and dancing are steps apart, which is the smoothest timeline we photograph.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

The downtown rooms are least affected by the table: a State Room wedding in December works because the ceremony is indoors and the portraits are the city at blue hour, 4:12 PM to 4:44 PM. The estates are the ones that need the rule; an October wedding at Willowdale or Glen Magna starts its ceremony at 3:17 PM or it loses the lawn.

Every venue above has its own page with sunset at that address and pricing, and the hubs for Boston and Salem list them all.

Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20-30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
