Cape Cod Wedding Timeline: When to Start Your Ceremony, Month by Month

Exact sunset and golden-hour times for a Cape Cod wedding in every month of 2027, the ceremony start we recommend for each, and notes on the Cape venues couples ask us about.

The most common timeline mistake on the Cape is a ceremony set for the same hour whether the wedding is in June or October. The sun does not cooperate with that. In mid-June it sets over the Cape at 8:16 PM; by mid-October it is gone at 5:59 PM, and by mid-November, after the clocks change, it is down at 4:20 PM. Same venue, same couple, a two-hour difference in when the day has to start.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

The Cape, month by month

Times are computed for the mid-Cape (Dennis), on the 15th of each month in 2027. Down-Cape and up-Cape venues are within a minute or two of these.

November1:35 PM3:38 PM4:20 PM4:50 PM9.8 h
December1:25 PM3:26 PM4:10 PM4:42 PM9.2 h

Three things stand out. June and July are almost identical, so a summer Saturday can start at 5:30 and still finish portraits with light. September, the Cape's favorite month after the crowds thin, has already lost an hour and a half of evening. And anything after the first weekend of November is a one o'clock ceremony if you want daylight portraits at all, which is worth knowing before you fall in love with a late-autumn date.

Which way your venue faces

On the Cape the water is on three sides, so the question is not whether you will have a waterfront sunset but whether the sun goes down over the water or over the land behind you. Bay-side venues on the north shore, like Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club in Brewster, look west-northwest across Cape Cod Bay in summer and get the sun setting into the water. Sound-side venues on the south shore, Wychmere Beach Club in Harwich Port and Pelham House Resort in Dennis Port, have the water in front of them and the sunset off to one side, which is a beautiful thing in its own right: the sky colors over the Sound while the light on the beach stays soft rather than blinding. Wequassett Resort and Golf Club sits on Pleasant Bay facing east, so the evening light there is reflected glow rather than a direct sunset. We scout the exact angle before the wedding; it decides where the ceremony chairs go.

Two honest notes. Shining Tides Weddings is technically across the canal in Mattapoisett, on the South Coast rather than the Cape, though couples searching for a Cape wedding find it and it deserves the mention. And Wychmere Beach Club appears twice in Google's listings, as the club and as its weddings page; they are the same property on Snow Inn Road.

What we would do

For a summer wedding, start at 5:30, do family formals right after the recessional, and walk out for portraits at 7:34 PM while cocktail hour runs. For September, start at 4:00 and do a first look at 2:30 so you are not spending golden hour on formals. For October and later, start at 3:00 or earlier, or accept that portraits will be in the last light and plan the reception to be lit the way it should be filmed. Whichever month it is, the peak-season table is on our Cape Cod page as well, and every venue above has its own page with sunset and pricing for that exact spot.

Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20-30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
