Coastal Maine Weddings From Kennebunkport to Bar Harbor: Sunset Times and Venue Notes

Maine's coast runs northeast, and that matters for a wedding more than it sounds. Bar Harbor is three and a half hours up the coast from Kennebunkport and far enough east that the sun rises at 4:47 AM there in June, 13 minutes before Kennebunkport, and by October it sets 10 minutes earlier. Small numbers, but they add up across a season, and they mean the ceremony hour has to move with the town.

Sunset by town, peak season

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

Kennebunkport

Ceremony in June at 5:39 PM; in September at 4:07 PM. Kennebunkport is the resort-town wedding: The Nonantum Resort on the Kennebunk River, White Barn Inn in its farmhouse across the river, Cape Arundel Inn & Resort on the Ocean Avenue point with the open Atlantic in front of it, and Wandby Landing on the river in Kennebunk. Hidden Pond is out at Goose Rocks with the pines and the pond, and River Winds Farm And Estate in Saco is the farm option, twenty minutes inland with a real field.

Portland

Portland is the city wedding on this coast, with two islands attached. Portland Ocean Gateway and Saltwater Grille are on the harbor, Brick South is the brick-warehouse space in the Thompson's Point district, and the two island venues are the ones nobody forgets: The Inn On Peaks Island on Peaks Island is a short ferry from downtown, and Fortland is the old fort on House Island in Casco Bay, reached by boat, with the city across the water. Caswell Farm & Wedding Barn in Gray and Flanagan Farm in Buxton are the barns, both about thirteen miles out.

Camden

Camden is the harbor with the mountains behind it, which is why couples drive three hours for it. The Norumbega and Whitehall Inn are the grand old inns on High Street, 16 Bay View is the boutique hotel on the harbor, and Camden Amphitheater is the public park at the water where the town lets you marry with the schooners behind you. Samoset Resort in Rockport is the resort on the point, and Tops'l Farm in Waldoboro is the farm-camp version, half an hour south. Sunset here in September is 6:47 PM, and Mount Battie at that hour is the portrait everyone wants; the park road closes around dusk, so it is a first-look location, not an after-ceremony one.

Bar Harbor

Everything in Bar Harbor is on Mount Desert Island with Acadia at the back door, and the venues cluster on the shore road: Bar Harbor Inn & Spa, Harborside Hotel, Spa & Marina and Bar Harbor Club on the water within a mile of each other, Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Event Center a mile up Eden Street, Ivy Manor Inn in the village. Because the sun goes early here, a September ceremony starts at 3:58 PM, and the portrait most couples want, Cadillac Mountain at sunset, is a twenty-minute drive and a vehicle reservation in season, so it belongs either to the first look or to the morning after, when for much of the year the mountain is the first place in the country to see the sun.
