Houston Wedding Ceremony Times by Month (and What to Do About July)

Houston has the most even light of any city we photograph in Texas. Sunset moves only three hours across the whole year here, from 5:24 PM in December to 8:23 PM in June, and the daylight swing is under four hours. That is good news for planning: the timeline you build for a March wedding is not far off the one for October. The bad news is the part everybody already knows, and there is a section on it below.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

The venues, inside the loop and out

Miles are straight-line from downtown.

Inside the loop the choice is between rooms: AvantGarden and The Bell Tower on 34th are Montrose and Garden Oaks staples with the review counts to prove it, The Astorian is the Sawyer Yards option, and The Houston Club is a downtown club with a view. Out west, Pelazzio Reception Venue Houston is the reception hall with the review count to match. And the two Conroe properties, The Carriage House Houston and Madera Estates, are forty miles up I-45 for a reason: they are estates with grounds, and they get the sunset the inner-loop rooms do not.

What to do about July

A July ceremony by the rule above starts at 5:38 PM, in air that is still in the nineties with the humidity to match. Houston venues know this, and many offer an indoor or covered ceremony option for exactly that reason; ask yours. If your ceremony is outdoors in June, July or August, the honest recommendation is a first look at four indoors, family formals right after it, a ceremony at seven as the sun drops behind the tree line, and a short portrait walk at 7:49 PM when it is cooler and the sky is doing its best work. October and November are the months Houston couples fight over, and the table shows why: a 2:40 PM ceremony in November means a 5:25 PM sunset and an evening that is finally comfortable.
