Newport, Rhode Island: Eight Wedding Venues Within Reach of the Harbor, and Where the Sun Sets

Newport is small enough that five of the venues on this list are within a mile of Bowen's Wharf, and that changes the shape of the day. Getting ready in a Thames Street inn, walking to the ceremony, and a reception with the harbor out the window is not a fantasy here; it is the default. The variable is which way the water faces, because on an island the sunset is only over the water from one side.

Which side of the island

The harbor side faces west. Belle Mer and Regatta Place on Goat Island look back at the town and the Pell Bridge, and the sun sets behind the bridge into Narragansett Bay; if you want the classic over-the-water sunset with sailboats in it, this is the side. OceanCliff Hotel on Ocean Drive looks southwest over the bay's mouth and gets the same sunset with fewer masts. The ocean side faces southeast. The Chanler at Cliff Walk sits above Easton's Beach, and Newport Beach House is on the beach itself; the sun rises out of the sea there and sets behind you, over the town, so the evening light is a soft glow on the water rather than a direct sunset, and a first-light session the next morning is the shot. Glen Manor House in Portsmouth is on the Sakonnet River side of the island, quiet and green, with the water to the east. Queen Anne's Loft and Little Gold are in-town rooms a few blocks from the wharf, for couples who want the ceremony at a church or on the Cliff Walk and the party close by.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

In June that puts the ceremony at 5:35 PM with golden hour opening at 7:38 PM; in September, one of Newport's most-booked months, the ceremony moves up to 4:09 PM. Note that the Cliff Walk and the beach are public and busy from Memorial Day to Labor Day, so a portrait walk there is a weekday-morning or a September thing.
