The Hill Country is one wedding region with two front doors. Dripping Springs and Driftwood are Austin's side of it, forty minutes from downtown on a good day. Boerne, Comfort and Spring Branch are San Antonio's side. Fredericksburg sits in the middle, an hour and a half from either city, which is exactly why couples pick it. The table below puts real numbers on that, because "in the Hill Country" covers a hundred miles.
Eighteen venues, by distance from Austin
Miles are straight-line from the Texas Capitol and from the Alamo, so they are comparable across venues; add a third or more for the drive, and more than that on a Friday afternoon on 290.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.
The catch: Hill Country summer
The rule above says a June ceremony starts at 5:50 PM. In June and July that is also the hottest hour of the day, with the sun still high enough to be in your guests' eyes if the ceremony site faces west. Many Hill Country venues put a tree line or a bluff behind the couple for exactly this reason; ask yours which way the ceremony site faces. If yours faces west, or you are marrying in July or August, the better trade is a first look at four in the shade, family formals right after it, and a ceremony at seven with the sun already behind the hills. You lose the golden-hour portrait walk and gain a wedding nobody remembers as hot. We will tell you which one your site needs after we scout it.
Spring and fall have no such problem. An April ceremony at 5:14 PM or an October one at 4:16 PM is close to perfect: warm, low sun, and long shadows across the ranch roads that make the Hill Country look like the Hill Country.
The Austin side versus the San Antonio side
The Dripping Springs cluster, Ma Maison Wedding Venue, Vista West Ranch and The Wildflower Barn, is where the highest review counts are, and that many reviews means that many weddings: the ceremony site, the flow of the day and the vendor logistics there are settled. The Fredericksburg group is smaller and more personal; La Bonne Vie Ranch and Contigo Ranch Fredericksburg are ranch properties with a wedding built into them, and the drive out on 290 through the peach stands is part of the day. Boerne and Comfort, Paniolo Ranch and Spinelli's Wedding Venue, are the San Antonio couple's answer to Dripping Springs, half an hour to an hour north of downtown with the same limestone-and-live-oak look.
Every venue above has its own page with the sunset at that exact address, pricing, and the nearest venues to it, and the region hub for the Hill Country lists all of them.
Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20-30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
