Vermont Barn Weddings: Stowe, Burlington and Woodstock Venues, and When the Sun Sets on Them

A Vermont barn wedding is mostly a question of which valley. Stowe and the Mansfield side of the mountain have the resorts and the polished barns; Jeffersonville and Cambridge on the north side are quieter; the Mad River Valley around Waitsfield has the farm barns; Woodstock and Quechee are the southern option, an hour and a half down I-89. The light, month by month

Computed for Stowe on the 15th of each month in 2027. Burlington runs a minute or two later, Woodstock a minute or two earlier.

Our rule for an outdoor ceremony is simple: start it two hours and forty-five minutes before sunset. Vows take twenty to thirty minutes, family formals another thirty, and that leaves a portrait walk that lands in golden hour with the reception opening as the light goes. Move the ceremony later than that and portraits happen in the dark; earlier and you are photographing in flat, overhead light with the good hour wasted on cocktail hour.

Foliage weeks

Peak color around Stowe usually lands somewhere between the last week of September and the middle of October, earlier in the higher valleys and later toward Woodstock, and it moves a week either way from year to year. What does not move is the sun: a mid-September Saturday starts its ceremony at 4:17 PM with sunset at 7:02 PM, and by the middle of October the ceremony is at 3:22 PM and the sun is gone at 6:07 PM. Foliage weekends are the year's most photographed and its shortest, so the timeline has to be built for it. We recommend a first look at 1:30, family formals at 2:00, a ceremony at 3:00, and a portrait walk at 5:27 PM when the hillsides are lit from the side; the reception is then indoors with the barn lit the way it should be filmed. Book the following morning for a second short session if the color is the point; the light at 7:06 AM is the best of the day and nobody else is awake.

June has the opposite problem: an 8:37 PM sunset and a 9:14 PM dusk mean the dance floor opens in daylight, which in a barn with big doors is lovely and in a barn without them is a lighting job. Ask us before you pick the barn.

Reading the list

The Stowe-side properties, Topnotch Resort, Edson Hill and Stone Hill Inn, are inns and resorts that handle guests, rooms and weather on one property. The Barn at Smugglers' Notch and The Barn at Boyden Farm are the true barns on the north side of the mountain, forty minutes from Stowe over the Notch when it is open and an hour around when it is not. The Inn at the Round Barn Farm and Skinner Barn in the Mad River Valley are the farms, and Zenbarn is the restaurant-barn in Waterbury Center with the highest review count on the list. The Woodstock group is its own trip: Woodstock Inn & Resort is the grand hotel on the green, The Quechee Inn at Marshland Farm is the country-inn version, and Reading Farms Estate is a private estate in the hills south of town.
