Burlington faces west. The city climbs a hill above Lake Champlain, and across the water are the Adirondacks of New York, so on a clear evening the sun goes down over a lake and a mountain range at the same time. Most of the venues couples ask us about are not on the lake, though. They are barns and farms spread out toward Jericho, Williston, Cambridge and the Mad River Valley, and the lake is a drive away. This post gives you the light for the city, the venues, and how to fit both the lake and a Vermont fall into one day.
The light in Burlington

Burlington sits on the western edge of New England's time zone, so its summer evenings run late. Mid-June sunset is 8:38 PM and civil dusk is 9:15 PM, later than Portland or Boston. One thing the table cannot show: from the waterfront, the sun meets the Adirondack ridgeline a little before the official sunset, so on the lake the last light comes a few minutes early.
Foliage weekends and the short outdoor season
Fall is the season most couples picture when they think of a Vermont wedding, and it is the hardest one to plan. Color in the Champlain Valley usually arrives a little later than in the higher towns to the east, and nobody can promise the peak week a year out. What we can promise is the clock. Mid-September gives you a 4:17 ceremony and a 7:02 sunset. Mid-October gives you 3:22 and 6:07, almost an hour less of evening.
The other side of foliage is demand. Leaf-peeping weekends fill hotels and inns across northern Vermont, and Burlington is a college town with its own busy fall weekends, so your guests will be competing for rooms. Block hotels as soon as your date is set.
At the other end of the year, the outdoor season starts slowly. April is mud season in Vermont, when the thaw turns fields and dirt roads soft, and May can still be cool. For a barn or farm venue, that means a lawn ceremony is safest from late May through early October, with a covered plan on the edges.
The venues
| Venue | Google rating | Area |
|---|---|---|
| The Mansfield Barn | 4.8 (143) | Jericho |
| Intervale Center | 4.8 (125) | Burlington |
| The Barn at Smugglers' Notch | 4.7 (118) | Jeffersonville |
| Copper at Dorset | 5.0 (60) | South Burlington |
| The Barn at Boyden Farm | 4.8 (52) | Cambridge |
| Red Barn Gardens | 4.9 (48) | Williston |
| Reading Farms Estate | 4.8 (43) | Reading |
| Skinner Barn | 4.7 (31) | Waitsfield |
Two venues keep you close to the city. Intervale Center is on Intervale Road in Burlington itself, in the river farmland on the north side of town, and Copper at Dorset is on Dorset Street in South Burlington. Copper at Dorset is the only 5.0 on the list, from 60 reviews.
The barns fan out to the east and north. The Mansfield Barn in Jericho has the most reviews here, 143, and Red Barn Gardens in Williston is rated 4.9 from 48. Farther north, The Barn at Smugglers' Notch in Jeffersonville and The Barn at Boyden Farm in Cambridge sit on the north side of Mount Mansfield. Skinner Barn is in Waitsfield in the Mad River Valley, to the southeast.
Reading Farms Estate is the outlier. Reading is well south, much closer to Woodstock than to Burlington, so treat it as a separate trip for your guests.
The Burlington venue hub lists them all.
What we would do
A June wedding in Williston or Jericho. Ceremony at 5:50, formals at 6:20, portraits in the field at 7:53, and sunset at 8:38. The dance floor opens in daylight, so ask whether the barn has big doors before you book, because that changes how the room looks after dark.
A lake portrait from an inland venue. If Lake Champlain matters to you, we schedule a first look and twenty minutes of portraits at the Burlington waterfront in the early afternoon, then drive to the barn for the ceremony. Trying to reach the lake at sunset after the ceremony usually means leaving your own cocktail hour.
An early October wedding at Smugglers' Notch or Cambridge. First look at 1:30, ceremony at 3:20, a portrait walk at 5:28 with the hillsides lit from the side, and sunset at 6:07. Dinner is in the barn, lit for film.
Our Burlington page has the details for photo, film, and photo + film here, and travel is included in all 50 states. Pricing is on the packages page and is the same at every venue. For the Stowe and Woodstock barns, with the mileage between them, see Vermont barn weddings.
Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20 to 30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
