A Greenwich wedding sits right on the state line. Of the seven venues couples ask us about when they say Greenwich, three are in Greenwich and Riverside, two are a few miles up the coast in Stamford, and two are across the border in Rye and Purchase, New York. It is a short drive between any of them, and they all share the same sky, so the timeline problem is the same everywhere: long summer evenings, and a fall that gets dark much faster than couples expect.
The light in Greenwich
Computed for the 15th of each month in 2027. Stamford, Rye and Purchase are within a minute of these times.
| Month | Start ceremony | Golden hour | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 2:05 PM | 4:08 PM | 4:50 PM | 9.6 h |
| February | 2:43 PM | 4:50 PM | 5:28 PM | 10.7 h |
| March | 4:15 PM | 6:24 PM | 7:00 PM | 11.9 h |
| April | 4:49 PM | 6:57 PM | 7:34 PM | 13.3 h |
| May | 5:20 PM | 7:26 PM | 8:05 PM | 14.5 h |
| June | 5:43 PM | 7:46 PM | 8:28 PM | 15.1 h |
| July | 5:40 PM | 7:44 PM | 8:25 PM | 14.8 h |
| August | 5:08 PM | 7:15 PM | 7:53 PM | 13.8 h |
| September | 4:18 PM | 6:27 PM | 7:03 PM | 12.5 h |
| October | 3:29 PM | 5:36 PM | 6:14 PM | 11.1 h |
| November | 1:50 PM | 3:54 PM | 4:35 PM | 9.9 h |
| December | 1:41 PM | 3:42 PM | 4:26 PM | 9.2 h |
The start-ceremony column is sunset minus two hours and forty-five minutes, which leaves room for vows, family formals and a portrait walk inside golden hour. As the southwestern corner of the state, Greenwich has the latest sunsets in Connecticut, a few minutes behind Hartford and Mystic, but the swing across the year is still six hours: 15.1 hours of daylight in June against 9.2 in December.
Fall here gets dark early
Couples picture an October wedding on the Sound with the trees turning, and that is a beautiful wedding. It is also a 3:29 ceremony. Foliage on the Connecticut coast tends to peak later than in the northern hills, usually in the second half of October, so the weekends with the best color are also the ones with the least light. Sunset on October 15 is 6:14, and civil dusk follows at 6:41. A 5:00 ceremony, the time that sounds right, means portraits in the dark.
November is harder again. The clocks go back on the first Sunday of the month, and after that a ceremony belongs at 1:50 with sunset at 4:35. December is the shortest day of the year, with sunset at 4:26.
The good news is that an indoor ceremony room turns the dark from a problem into a choice, so ask every venue you tour whether it has one: an indoor ceremony at whatever time you like, and portraits outside in the blue light after sunset. Build in travel time too. If guests are coming up I-95 or the Merritt Parkway on a Friday evening, the drive is longer than any map says.
The venues
| Venue | Google rating | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Delamar Greenwich Harbor | 4.5 (705) | Greenwich |
| The J House Greenwich | 4.4 (677) | Riverside |
| Whitby Castle | 4.7 (382) | Rye, NY |
| Abigail Kirsch at The Loading Dock | 4.5 (116) | Stamford |
| Serafresca at the IC | 4.9 (109) | Stamford |
| Reid Castle Events | 4.7 (90) | Purchase, NY |
| Foundation House | 4.9 (14) | Greenwich |
Delamar Greenwich Harbor, on Steamboat Road, is the most reviewed on the list and the one with the harbor in its name. The J House Greenwich is on East Putnam Avenue in Riverside, the eastern part of town. If your guests are staying the weekend, ask each venue about rooms and room blocks before you sign, because it changes how the day starts.
The two castles on the list are both just over the New York line. Whitby Castle is in Rye, on Boston Post Road, and Reid Castle Events is in Purchase. If you love the idea of a castle but are planning a Connecticut wedding, these are the closest, a short drive from downtown Greenwich.
In Stamford, Serafresca at the IC has the highest rating here, 4.9 on 109 reviews, and Abigail Kirsch at The Loading Dock is on Fairfield Avenue. Foundation House, on Old Mill Road in Greenwich, shares that 4.9 but on only fourteen reviews so far, so ask it more questions than you would ask a venue with hundreds. It does not have its own page on our site yet.
We do not list capacity or amenities because only the venue can quote those accurately. The Greenwich venue hub has every linked venue with the sunset at that exact address.
What we would do
June or July. Ceremony at 5:40, family formals right after, cocktail hour while we take the two of you out at 7:45 for golden hour, and back in before the 8:28 sunset. If you are on the water, the last ten minutes are the best of the day.
Mid October. A first look at 1:30 so the formals are done before the ceremony, ceremony at 3:30, and portraits from 5:36 until sunset at 6:14. If your heart is set on a later ceremony, we would hold it indoors at 5:00 and step outside right after for fifteen minutes in the last of the blue light.
December. Hold the ceremony indoors, take portraits at 3:45 in the golden light, then go back out for five minutes at about 4:45, between sunset and civil dusk at 4:57, when the harbor and the lights read beautifully on camera.
The full sunset table is on our Greenwich page, and our Connecticut venues by region post covers the Litchfield Hills, the shoreline and Hartford. We offer photo, film, and photo and film together, travel is included in all 50 states, and our published pricing is the same at every venue above.
Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20 to 30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
