Portland is one of the few wedding cities where part of your guest list may arrive by boat. The peninsula sits on Casco Bay with islands a short crossing away, the working waterfront runs along its south edge, and the farm barns are a half hour inland. That spread means a Portland timeline is as much about getting people from place to place as it is about the light, so this post covers both.
The light in Portland
Computed for the 15th of each month in 2027 for downtown Portland. South Portland and the near islands are within a minute of these times.
| Month | Start ceremony | Golden hour | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1:44 PM | 3:44 PM | 4:29 PM | 9.3 h |
| February | 2:26 PM | 4:30 PM | 5:11 PM | 10.5 h |
| March | 4:02 PM | 6:09 PM | 6:47 PM | 11.9 h |
| April | 4:39 PM | 6:45 PM | 7:24 PM | 13.4 h |
| May | 5:14 PM | 7:17 PM | 7:59 PM | 14.7 h |
| June | 5:39 PM | 7:40 PM | 8:24 PM | 15.4 h |
| July | 5:35 PM | 7:37 PM | 8:20 PM | 15.1 h |
| August | 4:59 PM | 7:05 PM | 7:44 PM | 14.0 h |
| September | 4:06 PM | 6:13 PM | 6:51 PM | 12.5 h |
| October | 3:12 PM | 5:18 PM | 5:57 PM | 11.0 h |
| November | 1:30 PM | 3:32 PM | 4:15 PM | 9.7 h |
| December | 1:19 PM | 3:17 PM | 4:04 PM | 9.0 h |
The range here is wide. A mid-June day has 15.4 hours of light and a mid-December day has 9.0, so the same venue asks for a 5:39 ceremony in summer and a 1:19 ceremony in winter. October is the month that surprises people: the leaves are at their best, but the sun is down before six, and once the clocks change in November it is gone by 4:15.
Fog on Casco Bay
The Gulf of Maine stays cold well into summer, and when warm, humid air moves over it the result is sea fog. Late spring and early summer are when it shows up most often, and it can sit over the harbor all day or roll in at four in the afternoon after a clear morning. Late summer and September tend to be clearer, which is one reason September is such a popular month here.
For pictures, fog is not bad news. It turns the waterfront soft and quiet, and some of our favorite coastal portraits are grey ones. For logistics it matters more. A foggy evening means no visible sunset, so we plan the portrait walk around the shoreline and the buildings rather than the sky. And on the water, fog can slow boats down. If your venue is on an island, give the schedule real slack and keep a land-side portrait plan ready in case the crossing runs late.
The venues
| Venue | Google rating | Area |
|---|---|---|
| Saltwater Grille | 4.4 (1,551) | South Portland |
| The Inn On Peaks Island | 4.3 (533) | Peaks Island |
| Grace Wedding Venue & Event Center | 4.1 (357) | Portland |
| Brick South Events & Catering Co. | 4.6 (147) | Portland |
| Portland Ocean Gateway | 4.6 (128) | Portland waterfront |
| Caswell Farm & Wedding Barn | 4.9 (105) | Gray |
| Flanagan Farm | 4.8 (73) | Buxton |
| Fortland | 5.0 (69) | House Island |
The list splits into three groups. The island venues are the most Portland of them all. The Inn On Peaks Island is on Peaks Island in Casco Bay, and Fortland is on House Island, so both mean a crossing for you and every guest. Fortland is the only perfect 5.0 on the list, from 69 reviews.
The waterfront and in-town venues keep everyone on the mainland. Portland Ocean Gateway sits on the pier of the same name on the city's waterfront, Saltwater Grille is on Front Street on the South Portland side of the harbor, and Grace is on Chestnut Street in the middle of the city. Brick South is on Resurgam Place, also in Portland. Saltwater Grille carries by far the most reviews on the list, 1,551, at a 4.4.
The barns are the inland choice. Caswell Farm & Wedding Barn in Gray, rated 4.9 from 105 reviews, is north of the city, and Flanagan Farm in Buxton is to the west. Both trade the ocean for open fields and an easier fog forecast, since sea fog usually thins as you move inland.
The full list for the area lives on the Portland venue hub.
What we would do
A June island wedding. Ceremony at 5:40, family formals right after on the island, a portrait walk along the shore at 7:40, and sunset at 8:24. We ask for the boat schedule early so the crew and the gear make the last crossing with you, and we keep forty minutes of slack in the afternoon in case the fog slows the morning boats.
A September barn wedding in Gray or Buxton. Ceremony at 4:05, formals at 4:35, cocktail hour, then fifteen minutes in the field at 6:15 while the light is low and gold. The reception moves into the barn as the sun goes at 6:51.
A December wedding downtown. First look at 11:30, ceremony at 1:15, and portraits on the waterfront at 3:15 in the last light. By 4:05 it is dark and the city lights are on, which is the right moment to move inside.

Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20 to 30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
