Portsmouth NH Wedding Venues on Both Sides of the River

Eight Portsmouth wedding venues in New Hampshire and across the river in Maine, with Google ratings, 2027 ceremony times, and a plan for early winter dark.

Portsmouth sits on the Piscataqua River, and the river is the state line. That gives a Portsmouth wedding something most cities do not have: venues in two states within a few miles of each other. The grand hotel is out on New Castle at the mouth of the harbor, the inland inn is up in Durham, and two of the eight venues below are in Maine, at Kittery Point and York. It is also a real city with a walkable downtown, which makes it one of the better places in New England for a wedding outside the summer months.

The light in Portsmouth

Computed for the 15th of each month in 2027 for downtown Portsmouth. New Castle, Rye and Kittery Point are within a minute or two.

The biggest single step in the table is between October and November. Mid-October sunset is 6:00 PM; mid-November it is 4:19 PM, an hour and forty-one minutes earlier, most of it from the clocks going back in early November. A couple who toured a venue on a bright October evening and booked a November date for the same hour will find their ceremony ending in the dark.

The early-dark months

From November through February, Portsmouth has nine to ten and a half hours of daylight, and the sun is low the whole day. That is not a reason to skip a winter date. It is a reason to plan the day differently.

The light in winter is soft and side-lit from early afternoon, so portraits at two o'clock look like portraits at golden hour in July. Then, after sunset, there is a short stretch of blue light, about half an hour by the table, when the sky still has color and the streetlights and windows are on. In a downtown with old brick buildings, that half hour is some of the best of the year for photographs and film.

The practical side is simple. Do the first look and the portraits before the ceremony, put the ceremony in the early afternoon, and choose a venue where the reception is indoors and a short walk or drive from where people are staying. Wind off the water is the other winter factor on New Castle and at Kittery Point, so keep any outdoor time on the coast short and plan the long portrait session somewhere sheltered.

On the New Hampshire coast, Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle has the largest review count on the list, 1,793. New Castle is the small island town at the harbor mouth, so the hotel is surrounded by water. The country club with the same name is in Rye, at a different address on the same road.

Three venues are in Portsmouth itself. The Surf Room is on Bow Street, The Envio is on Vaughan Street, and The Hawthorn is on Jewell Court. The Hawthorn is the only 5.0 on the list, from 29 reviews. These are the venues that make a winter date easy, because guests can stay in town and the night does not depend on the weather.

Inland, The Thompson Inn & Cyderhouse is on Bennett Road in Durham, the university town northwest of Portsmouth, and it holds a 4.9 from 105 reviews. Across the river in Maine, The View at Pepperrell Cove is at Kittery Point, rated 4.9 from 49 reviews, and Churchill Barn Weddings and Events is in York, the barn on the list.

Every venue in the area is on the Portsmouth venue hub.

What we would do

A June wedding on New Castle. Ceremony at 5:40, family formals at 6:10, a portrait walk by the water at 7:40, and sunset at 8:24. The reception still has light at nine.

An October wedding at Kittery Point or York. Ceremony at 3:15, formals before cocktail hour, and fifteen minutes of portraits at 5:21 while the low sun is still on the water. Sunset is 6:00, so the reception starts in the last of the color.

A December wedding downtown. First look at 11:45 and portraits until 1:00, ceremony at 1:30, and a short walk through the brick streets at 3:30. Sunset is 4:08 and dusk 4:41, and that blue half hour is when we take you back outside for ten minutes before dinner.

Our Portsmouth page covers photo, film, and photo + film for the Seacoast, and travel is included in all 50 states. The packages page has our pricing, which does not change from venue to venue. For the White Mountains and the barns around Manchester, see New Hampshire wedding venues, and for the Maine side of the coast, Coastal Maine weddings and light.

Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20 to 30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
