Salem is a portrait city. Brick sidewalks, old houses and the harbor are all within a few blocks of each other, and the North Shore around it, Danvers, Peabody, Beverly, Topsfield and Nahant, adds estates, farms and the open ocean within a short drive. The catch is the calendar. Salem has the earliest winter sunsets of any city we have written about this month, and an October that belongs to everyone else.
The light in Salem
Computed for the 15th of each month in 2027. The North Shore towns below are within a minute or two of these times.
| Month | Start ceremony | Golden hour | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1:50 PM | 3:51 PM | 4:35 PM | 9.4 h |
| February | 2:30 PM | 4:35 PM | 5:15 PM | 10.6 h |
| March | 4:04 PM | 6:12 PM | 6:49 PM | 11.9 h |
| April | 4:40 PM | 6:47 PM | 7:25 PM | 13.4 h |
| May | 5:13 PM | 7:18 PM | 7:58 PM | 14.6 h |
| June | 5:37 PM | 7:40 PM | 8:22 PM | 15.3 h |
| July | 5:34 PM | 7:37 PM | 8:19 PM | 15.0 h |
| August | 5:00 PM | 7:06 PM | 7:45 PM | 13.9 h |
| September | 4:08 PM | 6:16 PM | 6:53 PM | 12.5 h |
| October | 3:16 PM | 5:23 PM | 6:01 PM | 11.1 h |
| November | 1:36 PM | 3:39 PM | 4:21 PM | 9.8 h |
| December | 1:26 PM | 3:25 PM | 4:11 PM | 9.1 h |
The start-ceremony column is sunset minus two hours and forty-five minutes, which leaves room for vows, family formals and a portrait walk inside golden hour. Salem is far enough north and east that the year swings more than six hours, from 15.3 hours of daylight in June to 9.1 in December. A June wedding has light until well after eight. A December wedding has a sunset at 4:11.
October in Salem
Every couple who loves fall in New England thinks about an October wedding in Salem, and it can be wonderful. It needs a plan, for two reasons.
The first is the light. An October 15 ceremony belongs at 3:16, with sunset at 6:01 and civil dusk at 6:30. The foliage weekends late in the month are darker still, and after the clocks go back on the first Sunday of November the start time drops to 1:36.
The second is the crowd. Salem is famous for Halloween, and the whole month of October is its busiest season. Downtown streets, parking and hotel rooms all fill on October weekends, and the closer you get to Halloween, the fuller they are. If your venue or your portraits are downtown, expect more people in the background and longer drives between locations. Book guest rooms early, and think about whether a venue a few miles out of the center, in Danvers, Beverly or Topsfield, gives you the fall color without the crowds.
September is the quiet alternative: a 4:08 ceremony, warm evenings, and the town at its normal pace.

| Danversport | 4.7 (879) | Danvers |
| Willowdale Estate | 4.9 (522) | Topsfield |

The House of the Seven Gables, on Derby Street by the harbor, is one of the best-known historic houses in New England, and its 4,976 reviews come mostly from the visitors who tour it every year. That is worth remembering for an October date. Hamilton Hall, on Chestnut Street, is the other Salem address, on one of the city's best-known historic streets.
Out of the center, Willowdale Estate in Topsfield and Olio in Peabody share the highest rating on the list, 4.9, and Willowdale has more than twice the reviews. Glen Magna Farms and Danversport are both in Danvers, and Danversport has the second-highest review count here. Tupper Manor is on Hale Street in Beverly. Oceanview of Nahant is the one on the open ocean, out on the Nahant peninsula, and it is the venue on this list where the sunset is part of the plan.
We do not list capacity or amenities because only the venue can quote those accurately. The Salem venue hub has every venue with the sunset at that exact address.
What we would do
June. Ceremony at 5:35, formals right after, and the two of you out at 7:40 for golden hour. At Nahant, stay out until the 8:22 sunset.
September. Ceremony at 4:05, portraits from 6:15, sunset at 6:53. If you want downtown Salem in your photos, this is the month to do it.
October. A first look at 1:15 so formals are finished before the ceremony, ceremony at 3:15, and portraits from 5:23 until sunset at 6:01. If you want portraits downtown, we would do them early in the day, before the streets fill, and keep the evening at your venue.
December. Ceremony at 1:25, or indoors later if your venue allows it. Portraits at 3:25 in the golden light, then a few minutes outside at about 4:15, between sunset and civil dusk at 4:43, when the old brick and the street lights look their best.
The full sunset table is on our Salem page. Our Boston venues post puts the North Shore next to downtown Boston and the South Shore, and if you are weighing a fall wedding further west, the Berkshires fall timeline covers the hills. We offer photo, film, and photo and film together, travel is included in all 50 states, and our published pricing is the same at every venue above.
Elizabeth Scott is an independent wedding photography and film studio. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by any venue named here; venue names identify where couples marry. Ratings and review counts are Google's as of our last check and will change. Sunset and golden-hour times are computed for the 15th of each month in 2027; an outdoor ceremony in open shade can run 20 to 30 minutes later than the start times we suggest.
